Finding Faults: Inside Sean Bemis' Research

Sean Bemis put his hands together side by side to demonstrate two plates of the earth’s crust with a smooth boundary running between them. But that boundary is not always smooth and those plates do not always sit together neatly, which makes the earth’s crust a dynamic and complex surface.

STEMCats: Assisting with Science

While STEMCats may be one of the newest Living Learning Communities on campus, it is providing incoming students with many unique opportunities. Students are not only able to live on campus and take courses with like-minded peers, but STEMCats also allows incoming freshmen students to participate in research and connect with peers, upperclassmen, and professors. In this podcast, we talk with several Undergraduate Instructional Assistants, or UIA’s, who have been building connections with STEMCats freshmen through sharing their experiences. Learn more about the STEMCats program and UIA’s as they speak about what they enjoy about the program and their connections with younger students.

Compassionate Science: Edward Lo

Graduate student Edward Lo studies the sediment patterns and hydrology of a region in Brazil called the Pantanal, which is the world’s largest freshwater wetlands. Often American geologists base their research on a region within the U.S. One of the many things that makes Lo and his work unique is his commitment to research abroad.

Networked Publishing asks speakers to question or trace the future or present of digital publishing, particularly as scholarly work and university interests identify themselves as part of larger networks of meaning, interaction, professionalism, and education. What must digital publishing do to continue the promotion of ideas to both specialized and general audiences as our forms of communication continue to change? What is digital publishing currently doing in response to new scholarly demands? What are writers doing to better utilize platforms, media, strategies, audience interaction, or other features?

Academic publishing has dealt with a variety of incidents and narratives over the last several years regarding its ability to succeed in the digital era. We are asking invited speakers to address the challenges, needs, failures, successes, experiences, provocations, and other related topics to the future or present situation of digital publishing as a scholarly and/or academic exercise. Speakers will address audio, print, visual, and other forms of digital publishing.
