Research and Travel Support for Current Students
Departmental Research and Travel Support
Within the department, the Brown-McFarlan and Ferm funds support dissertation and thesis research, as well as travel to present results of research at professional meetings. Both funds are derived from contributions from alumni and friends of the department, specifically for the purpose of helping students with the expenses of their research. In order to conserve departmental funds for the greatest needs, students are expected to seek other sources of funding, from their advisors, the UK Graduate School, or professional societies, before funding will be made available from the departmental funds. Graduate School Sources
The Graduate School provides travel and research support to Ph.D. students, including:
- Travel to Professional Meetings
- Dissertation Enhancement Awards (Nomination by DGS; maximum of two awards per department per year)

- GSA Coal Division (A.L. Medlin Award deadline: tentative date Mar. 15, 2013)
- American Assoc. of Petroleum Geologists (Grants-in-aid deadline: Jan 31, 2013)
- TSOP (Spackman Award deadline: tentative date May 18, 2013)
- Sigma Xi (The Scientific Research Society: Grants-in-aid, March 15, October 15 annually)
