Assistantship and Fellowships
Assistantships and Fellowships
Fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships are awarded competitively to qualified applicants. All fellowship holders and assistants receive health insurance and are eligible for full tuition scholarships.
The department awards one allocated fellowship that pays $15,000 per year. Qualified applicants may also be nominated for other competitive fellowships awarded by the Graduate School.
Assistantships pay approximately $11,300-$12,100 for a 10-month appointment (depending on degree program). Tuition scholarships for 2005-2006 are valued at $6,318 per year for Kentucky residents and $13,968 per year for out-of-state (including international) students.
Qualified incoming students are also eligible for a graduate Pirtle Fellowship, which pays a summer stipend of $3,000 and is renewable. Students who are not eligible for Pirtle Fellowships can apply for $1,000 Pirtle Scholarships.
All full-time students can apply for research and travel grants from the department and from the Graduate School. Each grant is typically at least $400 per year.
